The Master

A master without a disciple is like a film without an audience. Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) need each other. The charismatic Dodd underpins the ideology with which his sect The Cause wins over souls the way Quell, a troubled, extremely fiery WWII veteran brews drink: with spit and glue, and plenty of paint thinner. Don’t wait for The Master to explode before you start having fun. There will be no blood.

Offscreen: a cinematic celebration of cult

If you, as a film buff, are aiming for as much street credibility as juvenile delinquent Johnny Depp in Cry-Baby, you’d better book tickets for these films from Offscreen’s Camp & Trash programme right now.

On Saturday thousands of enthusiastic visitors will once again flock to the city’s museums for Museum Night Fever. This sixteenth edition offers a hundred activities in 23 participating museums. In total, some 500 young city folk from various schools and associations – who were actively involved in drawing up the programme – will lay on extra activities to complement the permanent collections and current exhibitions.

John Waters: juvenile delinquent of 66

Offscreen, Belgium’s most adventurous film festival, is geared up to hit your retinas hard with a special focus on trash and camp cinema over the next few weeks. We talked to guest of honour John Waters, who will be the subject of a retrospective and will also do a live stand-up show. “It was never just about shocking people.”

New releases 27/2

Seven new releases this week, featuring - among many others - Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence as a wounded soul (no, not because of the stairs), Boule & Bill, grey softy Richard Gere, Bill Murray in good form, and Sylvester Stallone cliffhanging on to the 1980s!

Silver Linings Playbook

David O. Russell’s (Three KingsThe Fighter) latest film was nominated for eight Oscars, of which it won one last Sunday: the statuette for best actress went to Jennifer Lawrence. That may inflate expectations unduly. The mix of drama, comedy, and romance is enjoyable. But you have to withstand the fact that O Russell dictates what to feel and when to laugh.

Hyde Park on Hudson

Hyde Park on Hudson is in hetzelfde bedje ziek als Hitchcock.
